Prokletije, also known as the Albanian Alps, are one of the most beautiful and wild mountain ranges in Europe. They stretch at the junction of Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo, offering a true alpine experience to hikers seeking peace, natural beauty, and authenticity hard to find elsewhere. With characteristic steep rocky peaks, deep glacial valleys, high mountain pastures, crystal-clear lakes, and unforgettable views, Prokletije is home to some of the most impressive summits such as Maja Jezerce (2,694 m), Zla Kolata, and Maja e Rosit, attracting experienced hikers and lovers of breathtaking panoramas.
Prokletije are an important part of the Peaks of the Balkans hiking trail – a circular route about 190 km long, connecting three countries in roughly 10 to 13 days. Besides the full trail, shorter sections are popular, such as the hike between Theth and Valbona, exploring the Grbaja and Ropojana valleys, or ascents from the Plav and Gusinje areas.
The massif impresses with its biodiversity – from rare alpine plants to wild animals like bears, lynx, and eagles. The landscape constantly changes: forests give way to alpine meadows that bloom with colorful flowers in summer. Along with nature, hikers are captivated by the hospitality of locals, traditions, and the authentic villages where time seems to slow down.
The best time to visit is between June and September when conditions are stable, trails accessible, and temperatures pleasant. Although Prokletije are becoming more recognized, they still offer a sense of solitude and freedom rare elsewhere in Europe.
Get ready to be enchanted by the wild beauty of the Balkans!
