LAKE COMO – HIKING ESCAPE

The third largest Italian lake, officially called Lario, has been attracting visitors since the 18th century, when it became a popular stop for European nobility during their Grand Tours. In recent years, it has gained additional visibility as a filming location for movies such as Ocean’s Twelve and Casino Royale. However, the prestige of the area dates back even further – to Roman times – when Julius Caesar drained the marshes at the southwestern end of the lake, which was strategically located near Alpine passes, and funded the foundation of the city known as Novum Comum (today’s Como).

Lake Como is famous for its luxurious villas and beautiful gardens. On the lake’s northwestern shore, Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo offers a spectacular display of rhododendrons and azaleas in spring. Villa del Balbianello, located on the Lenno promontory, features an exotic garden and a loggia with breathtaking views of the lake. Its popularity has only grown thanks to appearances in films like Casino Royale and Star Wars.

The glacial shores of Lake Lario are a true paradise for hiking and nature enthusiasts. This magnificent region offers a multitude of hiking trails that wind through picturesque landscapes, passing lush alpine meadows, mystical forests, and panoramic viewpoints with stunning views of the deep blue lake and the towering mountain peaks.

Lake Lario – better known as Lake Como – is nestled between the Bergamasque and Orobic Alps, a region renowned for its outstanding natural beauty, traditional alpine villages, and rich cultural and historical heritage. Every trail here tells a story – of a past still alive today, and of nature that amazes in every season.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual mountain lover, you will find a trail here that nourishes the soul and energizes the body.

DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1

Early morning departure from Ljubljana. Along the way, we will make two stops for breakfast, coffee, and restroom breaks. Arrival in Como just before noon, followed by a walk through the city center and a scoop of authentic Italian gelato before continuing.

In the afternoon, we drive towards the village of Plesio, located above the town of Menaggio, from where we will set off on a short hike to Monte Grona (1,736 m). The hike is not technically demanding, but offers beautiful panoramic views of Lake Lario and the surrounding mountains.

We will make a stop at the Rifugio Menaggio mountain hut, where an optional dinner will be available. After the hike, we head to the hotel for check-in and rest.

In case of bad weather, the hike will be replaced by a visit to Villa Carlotta, a magnificent historic villa known for its art collection and botanical garden covering more than 70,000 m². A relaxing walk among exotic plants, centuries-old trees, and vibrant flower terraces will be a pleasant alternative to a day in the mountains. Entrance fee not included. The visit is optional.

Summit: Monte Grona
Elevation: 1,736 m
Trail length: 6 km
Elevation gain: 650 m
Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours

DAY 2

Our goal today is Monte Berlinghera (1,930 m), considered one of the most stunning panoramic viewpoints in the region. It lies in the Lepontine Alps, above the western shores of Lake Como and Lake Mezzola, on the border between the provinces of Como and Sondrio.

The ascent is moderately demanding, similar in difficulty to Monte Grona, with just over 100 meters more elevation gain. The surrounding area is rich in interconnected trails, giving us the option to extend the route or make a circular loop.

In the afternoon, we will have time to visit the town of Colico Piano and swim in the lake.

Summit: Monte Berlinghera
Elevation: 1,930 m
Trail length: 6 km
Elevation gain: 750 m
Hiking time: 3 to 4 hours

DAY 3

On this day, we tackle the highest peak in the province of Lecco – Monte Legnone (2,609 m). With its impressive silhouette, it towers over the Colico plain and the Alto Lario region, forming the natural divide between the Valtellina and Val Varone, near Valsassina.

Monte Legnone has a distinct pyramid shape and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Alps. The trail is beautiful and partially exposed to the sun, making it more physically demanding.

After the descent, we’ll have time to rest and refresh at the mountain hut. On the return to the valley, we’ll stop to visit the Orido di Bellano gorge.

Note: Monte Legnone requires more physical fitness than the other hikes in the program. It is not technically difficult, but there are sections with chains that provide support on rocky, non-exposed segments.

Summit: Monte Legnone
Elevation: 2,609 m
Trail length: 12 km
Elevation gain: 1,200 m
Hiking time: 6 to 7 hours
